Bill Viola on Ocean Without a Shore
Ocean Without a Shore was produced for the 2007 Venice Biennale and was installed in the Church of San Gallo in the heart of the city. A 12 foot wide water trough with a razor blade edge spillway overhead created a optically clear curtain of water. Bill's concept is that this is a barrier between the conscience world in which we live and the spirit world where our loved ones dwell. In the work the dead are given one last chance to visit the living but must immediately return to their netherworld. Two cameras were used simultaneously, one high definition representing the living world and a 1970's era security camera which produces a grainy image to represent the realm of the dead. As the spirits come through the curtain they change from an eerie, super grainy image to a super crisp high definition image.
